Tangshan, a prominent city in northeastern Hebei province, China, stands as a dynamic industrial and cultural hub. Nestled on the eastern edge of the North China Plain, Tangshan is strategically located within the Bohai Rim and serves as a key transit point to the Northeast, lying just 149 kilometers southeast of Beijing and 110 kilometers northwest of Tianjin.

Historically, Tangshan’s industrial roots trace back to 1870 with the establishment of coal mining operations by the Kailuan Group. This pioneering effort marked the city’s emergence as a cradle of industrialization in China. Tangshan’s legacy includes significant milestones like the creation of China’s first standard-gauge railway, the establishment of the first railway plant, and the development of the first steam locomotive and cement factory. Today, the city remains a major center for steel, energy, chemical, and ceramics production.

Geographically, Tangshan is bordered by the Bohai Sea to the south, the Yan Mountains to the north, and the Luan River to the east, with Qinhuangdao visible across the river. The city’s industrial and economic activities are complemented by its historical significance, particularly the 1976 Tangshan earthquake—a devastating event that registered 7.8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake flattened much of the city and resulted in a tragic loss of at least 255,000 lives. Despite this catastrophe, Tangshan has been resiliently rebuilt and now features among China’s top ten ports, attracting visitors and contributing significantly to the national economy.

With a population of 7,717,983 as of the 2020 census, Tangshan’s built-up area houses approximately 3,687,607 residents across its seven urban core districts. The city is renowned for its cultural heritage as well, including Ping opera from Luanzhou county, which is one of the five major Chinese operas.
