City Description
Jacksonville, the most populous city in Florida, is a vibrant urban center located on the Atlantic coast in northeastern Florida. As the seat of Duval County, Jacksonville underwent significant growth in 1968 through city-county consolidation, which extended its boundaries and increased its population dramatically. Covering about 900 square miles (2,300 km²), Jacksonville became the largest city by area in the contiguous United States as of 2020.
As of July 2022, Jacksonville’s population stood at approximately 971,319, while Duval County’s population was about 1 million. This consolidation made Jacksonville not only the most populous city in Florida but also the largest city in the Southeastern United States outside of Texas. The Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a population of 1,733,937, ranks as Florida’s fourth-largest metropolitan region, encompassing Clay, St. Johns, Nassau, and Baker counties.
Geographically, Jacksonville is uniquely positioned along the St. Johns River in the First Coast region, about 12 miles south of the Georgia state line and 350 miles north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities stretch along the adjacent Atlantic coast, offering scenic views and recreational activities.
Jacksonville’s history is rich and diverse. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people and later became the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline in 1564, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. Under British rule, a settlement known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and the Cow Ford to the British grew at the narrow point of the river where cattle crossed. In 1822, a year after the United States acquired Florida from Spain, a platted town was established and named Jacksonville in honor of Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and the seventh President of the United States.
Jacksonville’s development as a major military and civilian deep-water port began with harbor improvements in the late 19th century. Today, it hosts several military bases, including Naval Station Mayport, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, and the U.S. Marine Corps Blount Island Command. Alongside these, the Port of Jacksonville stands as Florida’s largest seaport by volume, contributing significantly to the local economy. Together with the nearby Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, these facilities form the third-largest military presence in the United States.
Economically, Jacksonville is diverse, with significant contributions from banking, insurance, healthcare, and logistics sectors. The city is also a crucial hub for tourism, particularly golf tourism, given the presence of the PGA Tour headquarters in nearby Ponte Vedra Beach. Jacksonville’s extensive and well-developed infrastructure supports its role as a major economic center in Florida.
Culturally, Jacksonville is a vibrant city with a rich array of cultural institutions, festivals, and recreational opportunities. The city’s arts scene includes numerous museums, theaters, and music venues that host a variety of performances and exhibitions. The Jacksonville Jazz Festival and the Jacksonville Film Festival are just a couple of the many events that draw visitors and locals alike. The city’s culinary scene is diverse, offering everything from fresh seafood to international cuisine.
Jacksonville’s human resources are bolstered by a highly educated workforce, with several higher education institutions in the area contributing to the city’s skilled labor pool. Universities such as the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University provide advanced education and research opportunities, supporting the city’s economic and intellectual growth.
The city’s natural environment is another significant asset. The extensive park system, the largest urban park system in the United States, offers residents and visitors ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The proximity to beaches and the river provides numerous recreational options, from boating and fishing to simply enjoying the scenic beauty.
In summary, Jacksonville is a dynamic and multifaceted city, offering a blend of historical depth, economic vitality, cultural richness, and natural beauty. Whether exploring its historical sites, engaging in its vibrant arts scene, or enjoying its outdoor activities, Jacksonville provides a unique and enriching experience for all who visit or call it home.
