City Description
Yangquan (simplified Chinese: 阳泉; traditional Chinese: 陽泉; pinyin: Yángquán) is a prefecture-level city situated in the east of Shanxi province, bordering Hebei province to the east. Known in ancient times as “Rippling Spring,” Yangquan is strategically located at the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau and the west side of the Taihang Mountains. Spanning an area of 4,452 square kilometers (1,719 square miles), Yangquan is an emerging industrial hub within Shanxi.
As of the 2020 Census, Yangquan’s population stood at 1,318,505, with 1,037,456 residents in the built-up (or metro) area comprising three urban districts and Pingding County, now conurbated. The city experiences a warm temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate, contributing to its distinct seasonal changes.
Yangquan holds the position of a gateway city to Shanxi province, lying midway between Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang, each 100 kilometers away. The city’s advantageous location connects it efficiently with the eastern developed areas and the central and western regions, making it a crucial transport hub for routes passing through Tianjin, Qingdao, and Huanghua.
The city is rich in cultural and historical attractions. Notable sites include the ninth pass and Niangzi pass of the Great Wall, the scenic Cangshan tourist spot, the Guanshan Academy, the former residence of Shi Pingmei, the Liangjiazhai Hot Spring, and the Shinaoshan Forest Park. Economically, Yangquan has made substantial strides in recent years. In 2017, the city achieved a regional gross domestic product (GDP) of 67.2 billion yuan, marking a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year. The primary industry contributed 1.04 billion yuan, growing by 3.0 percent. The secondary industry, which includes manufacturing and industrial activities, added 32.04 billion yuan, with a 5.6 percent increase. The tertiary industry, encompassing services, saw the highest growth rate at 7.1 percent, contributing 34.12 billion yuan. The economic structure of Yangquan shifted slightly, with the composition of the three industries adjusting from 1.7:48.0:50.3 in 2016 to 1.5:47.7:50.8 in 2017.
The per capita regional GDP of Yangquan in 2017 was 47,790 yuan, equivalent to approximately US$7,078 at the average exchange rate of that year. This economic performance underscores the city’s growing industrial base and its evolving role as a key player in the regional economy.
