City Description
Haiphong, also known as Hải Phòng in Vietnamese, is the third-largest city in Vietnam and serves as the principal port city of the Red River Delta. Spanning an area of 1,526.52 square kilometers (589.39 square miles), Haiphong is a bustling metropolis that comprises 8 urban districts and 7 rural districts, two of which cover the islands of Bạch Long Vĩ and Cát Hải in the South China Sea. As of 2021, the city is home to approximately 2,359,000 people, reflecting its status as a major urban center.
Haiphong’s rich history is marked by numerous significant events. The city holds the distinction of being the first place in Vietnam and Mainland Southeast Asia to have electricity. During the imperial era of Đại Việt, the Bạch Đằng River in Haiphong was the site of many legendary victories led by renowned commanders Ngô Quyền and Trần Hưng Đạo. In the 16th century, the Mạc dynasty promoted Haiphong as a secondary capital, transforming it into a crucial port town of Đàng Ngoài. The city’s prominence continued after the French conquest of Vietnam in 1888, when it was established as one of the principal cities of French Indochina by a decree from President Sadi Carnot. From 1954 to 1975, Haiphong was the most important maritime city of North Vietnam, and in 1976, it became one of the directly-controlled municipalities of a reunified Vietnam, along with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Geographically, Haiphong is strategically located by the South China Sea, making it an essential maritime hub. The city is known for its extensive port facilities, which host the headquarters of the Vietnam People’s Navy. The port’s significant role in trade and transportation has driven much of the city’s economic growth. Additionally, Haiphong is renowned for its beautiful natural landscapes, including the popular seaside vacation spot of Cát Bà Island, which is also known for its biological reservations.
Culturally, Haiphong is vibrant and diverse. The city is famous for its association with phoenix flowers, which bloom brilliantly throughout the area and have become a symbol of the city’s beauty. Haiphong’s rich cultural heritage is also evident in its traditional handicraft villages, which produce various goods ranging from ceramics to textiles. The city’s culinary scene is a delightful mix of traditional Vietnamese dishes and regional specialties, attracting food enthusiasts from near and far.
The human resources in Haiphong are notable for their skills in manufacturing and industry. The city’s economy is robust, with strengths in manufacturing, as evidenced by its large industrial parks and numerous smaller traditional handicraft villages. These industrial zones are a testament to Haiphong’s status as a manufacturing powerhouse, producing a wide range of goods for both domestic consumption and export.
Economically, Haiphong has been growing steadily, driven by its strategic location and industrial capabilities. The city’s port is a key asset, facilitating the movement of goods and contributing significantly to the local economy. Recent land reclamation efforts, such as the construction of the South Đình Vũ dike in 2022, demonstrate Haiphong’s ongoing commitment to expanding its infrastructure and enhancing its economic potential.
Haiphong is also a center for education and research, with several universities and institutions that contribute to the development of skilled professionals in various fields. The city’s healthcare system is well-developed, with hospitals and medical facilities providing quality care to residents.
Living in Haiphong offers a unique blend of urban convenience and natural beauty. The city’s parks, such as the Haiphong Opera House Park and the Đồ Sơn Beach, provide green spaces for relaxation and recreation. The coastal location ensures a mild climate, ideal for outdoor activities year-round.
In conclusion, Haiphong is a dynamic city that combines historical significance, economic strength, and cultural richness. Its strategic location, diverse population, and robust infrastructure make it an attractive destination for residents and visitors alike. Whether you’re exploring its historical sites, enjoying its natural beauty, or engaging in its economic activities, Haiphong offers a unique and enriching experience.
