City Description
Yueyang, nestled in the northeastern corner of Hunan Province, China, is a city rich in history and scenic beauty. Located on the eastern shores of Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River, Yueyang covers a vast administrative area of 14,896 km² (5,751 sq mi) and a more compact city proper area of 304 km² (117 sq mi). As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 5,051,922, with 1,134,058 residing in the urban core that includes Yueyanglou District, Yunxi District, and Junshan District.
Historically, Yueyang was known as Yuezhou or Yochow and has been an important center for trade and culture in the region. The city’s history is marked by its strategic location along major waterways, making it a significant port city. It is the only international trade port city in Hunan and holds the second position in economic strength within the province, trailing only behind Changsha, the provincial capital.
Yueyang is renowned for its cultural landmarks, most notably the Yueyang Tower, a historic structure that has become a symbol of the city. The tower overlooks Dongting Lake, a massive freshwater lake that adds to the city’s charm. Dongting Lake is also famous for its silver fish, a local delicacy enjoyed by many visitors.
